Leading with vision, experience, and success is what defines me. My name is Henry Sandate and I am running for election to the Board of Trustees for Johnson County Community College. I had the privilege and honor to be appointed by the Board of trustees of Johnson County Community College to fulfill the remainder of the term of Trustee Bob Drummond who retired. Their trust in me has allowed me to serve in the discipline where I am most passionate: education.
Human capital is single most important asset that a community has to offer. Specifically, highly-educated human capital. It is the foundation to building a great community or in our case a great county, Johnson County. The success of Johnson County has been due to its commitment to high quality education and is evident by all the national recognition awarded to all of our school districts and Johnson county Community College. The benefits are endless and the return on our education investment has attracted corporations, world class retailers, and entrepreneurs like myself who decided make Johnson County our home.
After college I moved here from Topeka, KS in 1982 and began my State Farm agency in 1983. As a small business owner I have had the opportunity to serve as a volunteer on various community boards, from Health care, social services, economic development, to education. Over the last 12 years I have mentored high school children and participated in entrepreneur boot camps for young adults.
The importance of education was instilled in me at a very young age and throughout my life. My parents were forced to drop out of middle school due to economic hardship. They each had to work to help support their siblings. A formal education and certification were always lifelong dreams of my parents for themselves and their children. After my brother, sister, and I graduated from college, my father acquired his GED 2 years later. A couple of years later my parents went to school to learn formal Spanish and became translators for the hospitals in their spare time.
As a small business owner of 33 years I understand firsthand the challenges, rewards, and concerns of sustaining a profitable business. Being a good steward and paying taxes is necessary to afford a quality of life with safe neighborhoods, parks for recreation, thriving business districts, and the best in education. But I also understand the importance of being trustworthy and responsible as an elected official when spending the taxpayer’s money. I am honored to be a Trustee of Johnson County Community college and I appreciate your trust in me to represent you. It is my hope that you will re-elect me to another term and together we can continue to lead Johnson County as a leader in quality of life. Sincerely, Henry Sandate
